MIS2018 Sneak Preview: Disruption is on its way

MIS2018 Sneak Preview: Disruption is on its way

The word “disruption” is not new to the medical innovation lexicon. We’ve used it to describe breakthrough innovations that have changed the way we treat patients for a given disease, or for new policies like the electronic medical record mandate or the Affordable Care Act. And while we’ve seen healthcare impacted by these forces, Cleveland Clinic sees more change lies ahead.

The limits of our current system are hard to ignore. In a world dominated by technologies that make our lives easier and more efficient – think voice recognition, mobile food & beverage orders, ride sharing, mobile communication, and AI – the overall healthcare system has been challenged by a lack of incentives to catch up. While patients can now be treated with unbelievably sophisticated medications and science-fiction-like procedures, it is not a stretch to say that it is too easy for the patient to get lost: lost in the lingo, the infrastructure, the decision making, and the process.

Hope, however, is not lost. Cleveland Clinic and many other organizations are making commitments to find new models that can streamline care, simplify reimbursement, enhance communication, and improve outcomes, all at better margins. But we can’t do it alone. Every single stakeholder needs to buy in by confronting each and every model: from payor incentives, pharma prices, device regulation, EMR interoperability, billing practices, and more.

The disruption is coming. New players are watching closely and are already starting to pounce on the numerous opportunities that the system is currently presenting. And with any disruption, there will be losers and there will be winners. This year’s Summit will focus and celebrate the models that will ensure that the winners are our patients.
