Observing World Patient Safety Day

Observing World Patient Safety Day

Established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, September 17 is World Patient Safety Day. To be marked annually, the day was coined in an effort to increase public awareness and engagement, enhance global understanding, and spur global solidarity and action to promote patient safety.

According to the WHO, 134 million adverse events occur each year due to unsafe care in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries, contributing to 2.6 million deaths annually, 15% of hospital expenses can be attributed to treating patient safety failures in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, and up to 80% of harm that takes place in the primary and ambulatory settings can be avoided. And though providers everywhere believe that no one should be harmed in healthcare, the arrival of COVID-19 has unveiled huge challenges and highlighted risks to health workers and patients alike.

In addition to keeping patient safety an area of innovation in the enterprise and industry, we at Cleveland Clinic Innovations are ensuring patient safety remains a priority through its presence at the 2020 Medical Innovation Summit on October 6. A conversation between international leaders, this fireside chat will face head-on the issues of patient safety and patient-centered healthcare in the middle of a global health crisis.
