Startup Showcase: An Onsite Glimpse of the Latest Technology

Unpack the Hack: Recapping the 4th Annual Cleveland Medical Hackathon

The Cleveland Medical Hackathon, now in its fourth year, was hosted at the HiMSS Innovation Center at the Global Center for Health Innovation on October 20-21, 2018. To add an element of surprise this year, the Hackathon challenge was revealed during the event’s opening remarks, giving the teams less than 24 hours to develop solutions and tools that utilize social determinants of health at the neighborhood level to keep people healthy and help to better manage chronic disease.

Top 10 Update: Ketamine for Treatment-Resistant Depression

In 2016, the use of Ketamine for Treatment-Resistent Depression was name #7 on the Top 10 Medical Innovations for 2017. There is now a Cleveland Clinic-led trial being conducted to test its effectiveness as compared to electroconvulsive therapy.

Dr. Eng Receives Prestigious Medal of Honor from American Cancer Society

Dr. Eng, who also is an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor, received the American Cancer Society’s Medal of Honor, the organization’s highest award, on October 18, 2018, in Washington, D.C. She was honored alongside four others who also “have made advances of unique magnitude in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and whose professional careers have engendered widespread feelings of admiration and respect.”

Everyone Needs a Mentor #DayOfTheGirl

In 2011, the United Nations named October 11 as the Day of the Girl Child. In the United States, we have the Day of the Girl, a 100 percent youth-led movement for gender justice and youth activism. Day of the Girl falls during U.S. National Health IT (NHIT) Week, which is fitting as one of the NHIT Week points of engagement is increasing economic opportunities. In order to do so, it is important to build a robust, diverse workforce, especially in healthcare.
