New Focus in HIT: Adding Value and Removing Barriers

In February of each year, tens of thousands of healthcare professionals, vendors and entrepreneurs gather to discuss the latest matters in health information technology. In the past, the HIMSS Global Conference served to showcase new technologies available for healthcare providers. But now as the majority of U.S. hospitals are compliant with the government mandate to adopt an EHR, the conference focus is shifting to the needs of patients and providers and most importantly, value.

“Re.St.Les. to treat Epilepsy” Chosen for I-Corps@Ohio

The project team behind “Re.St.Les.” a neurosurgical platform invented at Cleveland Clinic, has been selected for the 2019 cohort of I-Corps@Ohio. This technology is a minimally-invasive alternative to open brain surgery by Drs. Jorge Gonzalez-Martinez, Andre Machado and Imad Najm to combine Recording, Stimulation and Lesioning of epileptogenic tissue into an integrated product.

Voted the #7 Top 10 Medical Innovation for 2017, “Ketamine for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)” raised many eyebrows. Having unsavory applications, ketamine is rarely used in the medical space. But for individuals with TRD, it just might be a saving grace.

Machine Learning & Big Data: Is it possible to share de-identified data?

The 2019 JP Morgan Healthcare conference, along with the many others that congregate in San Francisco at the same time, draws a huge audience from across the healthcare spectrum, discussing any number of topics ranging from industry trends, intellectual property topics, to deal making discussions. An interesting discussion this year was around the use of previously collected clinical data by for-profit companies with artificial intelligence, machine learning platforms.

The Future of Telemedicine (and What’s in the Way)

Telemedicine: an annual topic at the Medical Innovation Summit, and a field we work in every day at Cleveland Clinic Innovations. Telemedicine and new remote ways to practice care have been a topic of conversation for some time. But with advancing technology and increasing consumer demand, its true integration into healthcare practice is just over the horizon. With new rules and regulations regarding the administration of and payment for telemedicine services, we inch closer. But much remains in the way of full impact.

To many people, a 3D printer is just a gadget. But to baby Paisley, it’s the technology that helped save her life. Born with the rare heart condition, dextrocardia with heterotaxy, a malformed ventricle, and other various defects – the need for major surgery was immediately apparent.

Top 10 Update: Virtual and Mixed Reality for Medical Education

Virtual and Mixed Reality for Medical Education was listed #6 on the Top 10 for 2019 at the 2018 Medical Innovation Summit. This technology allows medical students and healthcare professionals to practice procedures and techniques in a low risk environment. Not only will this technology be implemented at the new Health Education Campus for Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and CWRU Medical School, it is also being utilized by doctors within the hospital.

CAMVETS Cleveland “Kick-Off’ Event in the Books

On March 1^st, 60 + local engineers, designers, developers and overall creative minds gathered to give back to a group of individuals who have already proven their own selflessness through their services. Challenge America, the VA of Northeast Ohio Healthcare System (VANEOHCS), and Cleveland Clinic Innovations gathered a group of talented volunteers and veterans to launch Challenge America (Makers for Veterans CAMVETS) Cleveland 2019. The joint mission of all involved is to assemble teams of experts to create innovative solutions to the unmet needs of injured Veterans.
